This sweatshirt features a striking falcon design – or "sokil" as it's known in Ukrainian. A symbol deeply embedded in the nation's identity, the flying falcon is believed to be one of the most prominent interpretations behind the Ukrainian coat of arms.
For our winter collection, Albina Kolesnichenko masterfully intertwined the falcon with the symbolism of vertep, a Ukrainian Christmas tradition with roots in the 16th century. Vertep puppet theater brought the nativity story to life, while also weaving in vibrant scenes from everyday Ukrainian life, creating a captivating blend of the sacred and the secular.
This intricate tapestry of symbols captures the essence of vertep, where faith and folklore intertwine to create a unique celebration of Ukrainian Christmas.

Story behind the illustration
Vertep, a Ukrainian puppet theater tradition since the 16th century, depicts the Nativity scene with puppets on a two-story stage. Uniquely, it includes secular characters like Cossacks and merchants on the lower level, engaging in humorous dialogue and social commentary.
Originally performed solely with puppets, the tradition evolved to include human actors, blending storytelling, music, and drama. Inspired by Western mystery plays and infused with Ukrainian folk traditions, the Vertep remains a vibrant part of Ukraine's cultural heritage.
